Mostly, I appreciate the art of a finely crafted specialty cocktail, and the perfection of a simple dry gin martini.

We’re living in a time of great cocktail culture, and that should be appreciated.

Sazerrazzle Dazzle

A Drink from the Garden

A Drink from the Garden:
Farm to Table cocktails from LAist.com.

The Old-Fashioned by Troy Patterson (for Slate.Com)

The Old-Fashioned by Troy Patterson (for Slate.Com):
A killer article on cocktails, cocktailing, the old-fashioned and the evolution of a culture and a practice.

I’ve never actually tasted a Blood & Sand. It seems like that classic foreign film I keep wanting to watch, but I just can’t bring myself queue up whenever I sit down for movietime.

— JT Dobbs

First they wrote the book1, then they made a movie2 (for which the drink is named,) then they remade it four separate times, once with Sharon Stone. The French re-imagined it as a study of male friendship and determination with a sprinkling of anti-war sentiment and homoerotic undertones3. The STARZ Network simply used the title for their boob-n-gore-soaked, gladiatorial man-drama, Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

If all that sounds confusing, off-putting or even intriguing, let me present to you the ingredients:

The Blood and Sand

1 - 1.5 oz. blended scotch

1 oz. fresh orange Juice

3/4 oz. sweet vermouth

3/4 oz. cherry brandy

Shake this unholy gaggle of ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a good cherry and if you’re really going to go this far, a flamed orange zest.

Bella Rossa, Ginger Smash and Ruby Tuesday. Heaven.

Employee’s Only in the West Village serves amazing cocktails. The Ruby Tuesday is my favorite; it includes cherry puree and rye. I would like to have its babies.

Pretty much everything else there is also wonderful, and it’s just wrong to only drink one cocktail. Our favorite bartender, Rob, is starting his own bar, and yes, I will go to Brooklyn for his Manhattans.

Top 10 Holiday Cocktails from the LA Weekly

Top 10 Holiday Cocktails from the LA Weekly:
These all sound yummy and decadent. I’d like to add that Lola’s Egg Nog Martini was far better than I expected it to be (although I had it with vodka and not rum). The Canton ginger liqueur made a big difference. Often their specialty drinks are too sweet for me (meaning I drink them too quickly).

Holiday Drinking

No, no, I’m not talking about that stuff we do to keep from murdering our own families in a frenzy of tinsel and beef and blood. I’m talking traditional holiday drinks that we only drink during the merriest time of the year. I’m going to host a small boozy Scandinavian get together this year, largely as an excuse to make Glogg, but the holiday drink I most remember longing for as a kid was a Tom & Jerry.

This recipe: Tom and Jerry from Epicurious is closest to the batter based drink my grandparents used to make. I remember it being thicker than this, but then, my cousin and I were doled out a little atop some hot water and told to go entertain ourselves while the adults got smashed on hot rum and nutmeg.

So, what’s your favorite holiday drink?

Bartenders Are Risking Their Very LIVES to Bring Us Fancy Drinks

Bartenders Are Risking Their Very LIVES to Bring Us Fancy Drinks:
Their very lives, folks.
1. What is your favorite drink to order in a dive bar and in a cocktail bar?

2. What is your favorite type of drink to make?

3. What is your least favorite drink to make?

4. What is your position on well booze?

5. What can you tell about people by what they order to drink?

6. (Bonus Question) Includes what is a question drunk people always ask and what do you like about where you work and what you do.

A really lovely vodka based martini with a nice cold sake...

A really lovely vodka based martini with a nice cold sake instead of vermouth and a cucumber garnish with cucumber straws in the drink. I love good cold sake with sushi, but it was a bitterly cold night and this was the perfect appetizer for a lovely round of red snapper with shiso leaf.

All of it was made wildly better by the company of my favorite people in the world (accept for the 6 year old who is too young to drink sake:)

Bartenders, Tales of...

So the great thing about a good bar on a slow to medium night is that the bartender is usually happy to chat a little with you, particularly about favorite beverages, favorite brands, wacky shit that’s happened that week, and occasionally about world politics or the super bowl. Or, if you’re at the White Horse, the bartender will tell you about her crazy husband, and offer you popcorn, and yell about foul language at the pool table, and tell you that you cannot make out in her bar. Because that last one is not at all something I had to learn the hard way. No sirree.

So, favorite bartender stories. (I already cheated, I guess. I will never ever order a martini at the White Horse again, but it remains one of my favorite places in Los Angeles for the atmosphere, the popcorn, the cookies, the hot dogs, and the owner, even if she won’t let you act inappropriate in what is basically her living room under a seedy motel).
